The Peer Assistance, Leadership and Support Program

A Joint Project of

the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools

and

the Metropolitan Nashville Education Association

What are some question the PALS can answer for me?

In addition to guidance in the art of teaching, there are many frequently asked questions that the PALS answer for their protégés.

What is the PALS Program?

The Peer Assistance, Leadership, and Support Program (PALS) is a joint project of Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools and the Metropolitan Nashville Education Association.  Through PALS, a cadre of outstanding classroom teachers is released from their regular duties to work with other teachers on a full-time basis to improve instruction and mentor new teachers. The mentor teachers (Peer Assistance Leaders or "PALS") work in a confidential, non-evaluative setting with their protégés.

Who is assisted by the PALS program?

All teachers new to Metro Public Schools will participate in the program.  Experienced teachers new to Metro will require less assistance than first year teachers. Assistance for inexperienced teachers will be intensive and ongoing throughout the year.

How will the PALS assist?

A PAL is expected to:

·        Offer non-evaluative classroom observations and feedback

·        Provide assistance in establishing goals

·        Monitor progress on established goals

·        Contact with resource personnel

·        Do demonstration teaching

·        Videotape lessons when necessary

·        Be an effective resource to teachers for MNPS policies and procedures

·        Help in effective lesson planning

·        Suggest helpful workshops, inservice programs, and university courses

·        Use conferencing skills to help teachers

·        Demonstrate self-assessment techniques

·        Conduct workshops

·        Assist in classroom management techniques

·        Lend assistance with the Tennessee Framework for Teacher Evaluation

What is the PALS panel?

The PALS panel is composed of eight members: the MNEA President, Vice President, two others appointed by the MNEA, the Director of Professional Development and three members appointed by the Board of Education. The PALS Panel oversees the program, monitors the progress of participants, selects teachers to serve as PALs and provides regular updates to the MNEA, the Board of Education, and the Professional Council.

How can I reach my PAL?

The PALS are located at the Randalls Learning Center. However, they are in the schools most of the time, but you can leave a message at 783-2810 or use the cell phone numbers listed below:
